The ancient Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun;" they believed the stone would protect those who wore it from the terror of night, especially when set in gold. Many historians believe that the gems of Cleopatra's timeless emerald collection were actually peridots. The shrine built for the Three Holy Kings in Cologne, Germany's Cathedral is actually composed of peridots, not emeralds as initially believed. Peridot once symbolized the tears of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanos. Peridot represent prosperity, good fortune, love, and happiness.
